Corten Steel Plates

Corten Steel Plates  are a type of steel plate that has been made by undergoing weathering, which makes it stronger and more resistant to corrosion. These are typically used in bridges, building facades, or other types of construction that require load bearing materials to be outdoors.

This type of steel is a blend of iron and other elements, like copper, chromium, and nickel. When the material is exposed to air and moisture, it begins to rust as normal metal would. However, the alloying elements cause a protective layer of fine-textured rust to form, which actually shields the steel from further damage. It can take a few months to a few years for this rust layer to form, but once it does, the steel will remain protected from further corrosion.

The material is also known as weathering steel, and it’s a popular choice for architects that want to add an industrial look to their projects. It can be painted or left to develop its natural rust-colored patina, and it’s ideal for retaining walls because of the durability and strength that it offers.

Its midcentury industrial flavor also makes it an excellent choice for garden plans that are more contemporary in nature. The no frills aesthetic of the material paired with the rugged texture of the cladding creates an elegant and timeless design. It’s even been incorporated into the renovation of the memorial to country music legend, Patsy Cline. The curved steel plates add a unique, aesthetic feature to the project.
